A cremation urn is a container that holds “ashes” (otherwise known as cremated remains). They are used if cremated remains are to be kept above ground by the family and also if they are to be interred (either in a wall niche or below ground in a cemetery).

Before you start looking at urns, it’s first necessary to know where your loved one’s final resting place will be. The most common options (and the most appropriate urns for each option) are as follows:

  • Kept with the family at home: Any cremation urn can be selected
  • Scattered in a place of significance: Scattering tubes are recommended.
  • Sea burial: A water burial urn (such as a rock salt biodegradable urn) may be appropriate.
  • Placement in a columbarium or wall niche at a cemetery: A rectangular shaped cremation urn (usually made from wood or marble) is appropriate as it will be required to fit within the dimensions of the niche.
  • Interred in a cemetery: While just about any cremation urn can be chosen, you will most likely need to purchase an urn vault as well (see below)
  • Interred in a natural burial ground: The natural burial ground will most likely require you to use an eco-friendly biodegradable urn
